ASICS launch the Gel Nimbus 25 running shoes and we put them to the test

As an industry leader in the running market, any ASICS release is sure to pique the interest of fans of the sport, myself included.

February 2023 sees the launch of the Gel Nimbus 25 which is the latest addition to the Japanese label’s footwear range - and the most innovative yet.

Crafted using brand new PureGEL technology, which delivers extra shock absorption for softer landings, extra-lightweight cushioning, featuring 20 per cent more foam that’s made in part with bio-based fibres, and a new knitted tongue for a more adaptive fit, it’s designed to provide higher performance stride after stride. They’ve even been heralded in an independent study by Australian-based Biomechanics Lab as ‘the most comfortable running shoe’ out there, which is quite the accolade.

Currently in the midst of training for the Paris Marathon in April, running a mixture of long, short, and speed distances, I was eager to get my hands on a pair of these hyped running shoes to see if they lived up to all the praise. As a fan of the brand, I was hesitant to relinquish my trusty Gel Nimbus 24s - especially so deep into my training - to try this new, supposedly upgraded style. How wrong I was! Even after my first workout wearing the new design, they felt lighter, offered a smoother stride, and delivered a springier rebound every time my foot hit the pavement.

In actual fact, they’re the same weight as their predecessors at 290g, but thanks to the cloud-like level of bounce that propels you forward as you run and a streamlined fit that hugs the foot and ankle with the stretchy collar construction, they’ve got an ultra-lightweight barely-there feel that’s top of the running gear checklist. I would go as far to agree with the Australian study and say they’re the most comfortable shoes I’ve ever trained in.

It’s not just comfort levels to adore. The shoe boasts reflective details for visibility after dark, advanced ventilation to prevent overheating, increased durability thanks to the rubber outsole and even improved eco-friendly credentials, from the 75 per cent recycled upper to the new dying process that reduces carbon emissions.

For those of you who, like me, care as much about their running look as hitting new PBs, they’re available in 19 colourways. There’s a toned down navy (my favourite), and a fresh light blue to a statement neon yellow, all featuring ASICS trademark design to the side, so you don’t have to compromise on style to enjoy the enhanced performance.

The good news? If you’re based in London and want to try before you buy, every Wednesday until March 22 you can test the Nimbus 25 for yourself at the brand’s weekly run clubs happening from its Oxford Street store. All you need to do is book here.

We’re sure you’ll be just as impressed as we are.
