Asian Games: Union minister Anurag Thakur heaps plaudits on Indian rowers

NEW DELHI: Union sports minister Anurag Thakur heaped praise on the victorious Men's Quadruple Sculls team, highlighting their stellar performance at the ongoing Asian Games in Hangzhou.

The minister took to his official social media account to congratulate and laud the achievements of Satnam Singh, Parminder Singh, Sukhmeet Singh, and Jakar Khan, who formed part of India's Men's Quadruple Sculls team.

Minister Thakur also extended his congratulations to the entire rowing contingent for their impressive showing at the Asian Games 2023. He emphasized the athletes' dedication, passion, and exceptional teamwork, which have brought pride to India.

"Our Rowers have done it again! Mastering the tranquil waters, our Champions have secured the 5th medal in this sport, signing off with a bronze. Congratulations to Satnam Singh, Parminder Singh, Sukhmeet Singh, and Jakar Khan for their exemplary performance in Men's Quadruple Sculls, achieving this feat with a timing of 6:08:61. Kudos to the entire Rowing Contingent, showcasing their prowess and dedication. Your passion, determination and seamless teamwork have made India proud," wrote Anurag Thakur on his social media platform.

The Men's Quadruple Sculls winners clocked an impressive time of 6:08:61s in the race, securing India's fifth medal in rowing. China clinched the gold medal with a time of 6:02:65, while Uzbekistan secured the silver with a time of 6:04:64.

In the Men's four rowing event, the Indian rowing team consisting of Ashish Kumar, Bheem Singh, Jaswinder Singh, and Punit Kumar added to India's medal tally by securing a bronze medal. The team recorded a time of 6:10:81.

India's rowing campaign at the Asian Games got off to a promising start as rowers Arjun Lal Jat and Arvind Singh bagged a silver medal on the first day of the multi-sport event. The duo finished just behind China in the final of the men’s rowing lightweight double sculls, clocking a time of 6:28:18s.

Another rowing medal was secured by Lekh Ram and Babu Lal Yadav in the Men’s Pair Final, where they clinched a bronze with a time of 6:50:41s. Hong Kong and Uzbekistan claimed the first and second positions, respectively.

Indian rowers continued their impressive run by securing second place in the Men’s Coxed Eight final event, clocking a time of 05:43:01s at the Asian Games. The team included Neeraj, Naresh Kalwaniya, Neetish Kumar, Charanjeet Singh, Jaswinder Singh, Bheem Singh, Punit Kumar, and Ashish, who delivered a strong late push to earn a silver medal.

As of now, India have secured a total of 10 medals at the Asian Games, comprising 1 gold, 3 silver, and 6 bronze medals.
