Asian fast food giant Jollibee is coming to the site of Cardiff's Burger King

Fast food fans in Cardiff got a shock last month when a branch of Burger King which had been a city centre fixture for decades suddenly closed its doors.

But now the popular Queen Street spot, which had served shoppers and clubbers in the capital since the early '90s, is to be replaced by a Filipino fried chicken chain after the coronavirus pandemic caused a slump in trade.

Called Jollibee, it's one of the biggest and fastest growing Asian restaurant companies in the world and outsells even the likes of McDonalds and KFC in the Phillipines.

Curiously dubbed "the home of the famous chicken joy", it's known for its mix of American and Southeast Asian inspired meals and, aside from fried chicken, one of the staples on its menu is sweet spaghetti served in tomato sauce with hotdog slices and melted cheese.

The brand opened its first international restaurant in 1987 and is now in more than 1,466 locations worldwide, with Europe and the UK being eyed up as part of a £30m ongoing expansion.

The first UK Jollibee store opened in London's Earls Court in 2018 and expanded to Liverpool and Leicester in 2020.

The Cardiff branch is set to open in the coming months, with others also planned for cities like Edinburgh and Leeds.
