An England cricketer, a Paralympics-GB coach and an award-winning London chef are among those in the running to take home trophies at the Asian Achievers Awards tonight.

In its 19th year, the awards celebrate British Asian talent across the arts, community service, sports, uniformed services and business.

A total of 11 awards will be handed out at a ceremony at the Grosvenor House hotel, hosted by EastEnders actor Nitin Ganatra and Masterchef semi-finalist Nisha Parmar.

Shortlisted nominees include restaurateur Asma Khan, founder of Darjeeling Express on Carnaby Street, who is in the running to take home the woman of the year award. Hafsa Qureshi, the Stonewall Bi Role Model 2019, has been recognised for her work on behalf of BAME LGBTQ+ people and is up for an award in the uniformed, civil and public services category, while Pride in London director of communications, Asad Dhunna, has been nominated for professional of the year.

London’s deputy mayor for business, Rajesh Agrawal, has been tipped for the editors award for public service, while England cricketer Adil Rashid is up for the sports personality of the year, as is Haj Singh Bhania, the GB men’s wheelchair basketball head coach.
