Asia Cup 2023: Hambantota likely to replace Colombo as venue for 'Super 4' matches and final

According to sources from Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), it is probable that the 'Super 4' games and the Asia Cup final will be relocated from Colombo to the southern district of Hambantota. An announcement from the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) is expected later on Tuesday.

This decision has been prompted by heavy rainfall in the capital city and the central town of Kandy, which has already impacted both of India's matches.

The highly anticipated India-Pakistan clash at Kandy's Pallekele stadium was called off after one innings due to a torrential downpour last Saturday. Additionally, India's match against Nepal on Monday was also shortened due to rain.

Sources have indicated that broadcast operators and local communications service providers have been directed to transfer their facilities to Hambantota, a dry zone venue that has recently experienced a drought.

As a result, all five 'Super 4' games and the final, initially scheduled for the Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, are now likely to be held in Hambantota.

It's worth noting that Hambantota's Rajapaksa Stadium was not originally part of the Asia Cup schedule. The last one-day international (ODI) match held there was in August when Afghanistan hosted Pakistan in the second game of a three-match series.

There is also a proposal to have a reserve day for the upcoming 'Super 4' game between India and Pakistan scheduled for Sunday.
