Ashwin may replace Axar Patel in final World Cup squad

Veteran off-spinner R Ashwin is set to replace injured left-arm spinner Axar Patel in India's final squad for the World Cup. "Axar is suffering from a quadricep injury, which takes a long time to heal. KL Rahul was suffering from a similar injury, and took four months to recover. It makes sense to not rush him now for the World Cup, given the way Ashwin has bowled in this series," the source said.

The reuniting of the old firm of Ashwin and Jadeja-they took 6-83 in 12.2 overs at Indore and 2-98 at Mohali in 20 overs -gives India effective ammunition in the spin bowling department, especially when you factor in Kuldeep Yadav's splendid form.

Captain Rohit Sharma seemed pleased with Ashwin's performance in this series.

"He has got the class, he has got the experience of playing the sport and he has handled the pressure. It is just that he has not played ODIs in the last y ear or so. But you cannot take away the class and the experience. He has got a lot of variations up his sleeve," Rohit said.
