Ashton man died after being hit by van as he walked home from pub, court hears

A Tameside man was walking back from a night at his local pub when he was hit by a van which drove away, a court has heard.

An inquest into the death of David Clegg was opened at South Manchester Coroners' Court on Friday morning (July 2).

The court heard that Mr Clegg, 56, died on June 20 after a collision near the Royal Oak pub and his home on Kings Road, Ashton-under-Lyne.

Claire Smith, police coroners officer at Greater Manchester Police, told the court that Mr Clegg was seen on CCTV speaking to landlady at the Royal Oak - who he 'knew personally' - before leaving to return home.

She said: "A short time after leaving a local public house, Mr Clegg was struck by a vehicle as he attempted to cross the road.

"He successfully negotiated one lane before being struck by a Mercedes van in the opposite lane.

"The van was then driven off.

"Medical interventions were made but his injuries were unsurvivable and his death was pronounced at the scene."

Ms Smith said that Mr Clegg's family provided police with a photograph and description of the newspaper distributor, who was born in Hyde.

They later identified Mr Clegg, who was single at the time of his death.

At the inquest opening, coroner Chris Morris read evidence from Dr Naomi Carter, who conducted a post-mortem.

He said: "She expresses the opinion that Mr Clegg tragically died as a consequence of multiple injuries."

Mr Morris adjourned the inquest to February 15, 2022, for further evidence.

Emergency services were called out to Hurst Cross at around 11.45pm on June 19 following reports of a collision.

GMP believes a white Mercedes Sprinter van had been travelling along Lees Road.

It then continued onto Hurst Cross, where it was involved in a collision with Mr Clegg, who was crossing the road.

The van failed to stop at the scene and was later found abandoned on Park Road in Stalybridge.

Three people have so far been arrested in connection with the incident, with all three since released pending further investigation.
