Ashton Gate to host the 2019/20 European Heineken Champions Cup final

Ashton Gate, the home of Gallagher Premiership side Bristol Bears, will host the 2019/20 European Heineken Champions Cup final it was confirmed today.

Exeter Chiefs beat Toulouse 28-18 at Sandy Park to secure their first ever trip to a European final as they dumped out the four time winners from France who were also knocked out of the competition at this stage the previous season.

England prop Harry Williams scored a brace of close range tries while Joe and Sam Simmonds each crossed the line to set up the victory despite scores for Toulouse from Alban Placines and Matthis Lebel.

In the earlier semi-final Juan Imhoff scored a 76th minute try to see Racing 92 beat Saracens 19-15 in Paris.

The only try of the match, plus three penalties from Teddy Iribaren and five points from the boot of Maxime Machenaud cancelled out five penalty kicks from Alex Goode who once again was standing in at fly-half for the suspended England captain Owen Farrell.

The final was originally meant to be played in Marseille but due to the coronavirus pandemic the set-piece event of European rugby which normally sees tens of thousands of fans attend, will now be played in the French city in 2020/21.

Bristol's Ashton Gate stadium will host the final instead this season on October 17.

Kick-off will be at 4.45pm English time and the game will be shown live on BT Sport and Channel 4.

Bristol Bears have reached the final of the Challenge Cup which is normally played in the same location at the Champions Cup final however EPCR have confirmed that will not be the case this season.

The organisers of the European tournaments are expected to announce the venue for the Challenge Cup final later tonight following the conclusion of the second semi-final between Toulon and Leicester Tigers.

Bristol reached the final with a 37-20 victory over French side Bordeaux Begles at Ashton Gate on Friday night.
