Ashling Murphy: Lord Mayor of Dublin opens book of condolence for tragic Offaly teacher

Lord Mayor of Dublin Alison Gilliland has opened a book of condolence for tragic Ashling Murphy.

The 23-year-old primary school teacher was viciously beaten to death in Tullamore.

Cllr Gilliland shared the link to the online book via Twitter with the hashtag #SheWasGoingForARun, explaining that it is available for people to sign until Friday, January 21.

Messages will be printed and forwarded directly to Ashling's family after that date.

Condolences for Ashling's family and friends have been pouring in since news of her death broke.

A number of memorial events are being held in Dublin to pay respect to Ashling and her loved ones, including a vigil outside the Dail at 4pm today (Friday, January 14), organised by The National Women's Council of Ireland.

They said: "There has been a huge outpouring of grief and support across Ireland for Ashling and her family.

"Women must be safe in our homes and our communities. Join us and call for an end to men’s violence against women."

There will also be a sunrise walk tomorrow, Saturday, January 15 at 8am in Sandymount organised by Dublin model and influencer Holly Carpenter.

Additionally, members of the Palmerstown community will meet outside the Palmerstwon House Pub tomorrow at 4pm for a 5km solidarity walk.

The book of condolence for Ashling Murphy's family can be accessed on the Dublin City Council website.
