Ashling Murphy: Holly Carpenter to host Sandymount sunrise walk in memory of Offaly teacher

Dublin model and influencer Holly Carpenter has organised a socially distanced sunrise walk at Sandymount Strand in memory of Ashling Murphy.

Ms Murphy was murdered while out for a run after work along the canal bank in Tullamore, Co Offaly at around 4pm on Wednesday.

The sunrise walk takes place on Saturday, January 15 with the group meeting between 8am and 8.10am at Sandymount Strand to walk along the coast as the sun rises.

30 year old Holly took to social media to inform followers of the event, writing on Twitter: "If anyone can’t make tomorrow's vigil for Ashling Murphy (this Friday the 14th at Dáil Éireann 4-5pm) then maybe you would like to come to this on Saturday."

After sharing details of the memorial event, Holly received a message form local cafe Brother Bean, which is based in Railway Union rugby club in Sandymount.

They informed her of plans to donate all coffee proceeds to Women's Aid on Saturday.

They wrote: "[We] would love to welcome you all after the walk. We are just around the corner."

In a burst of Instagram stories, an emotional Holly told her followers how she was heartbroken over "how young she was, how she was just going out for a jog in broad daylight."

She said: "I don't know how many people would be up for doing this with me. Even if there's literally only five of us, I just think it could be a really nice way to show our respect.

"This is a time that Irish women need to come together. We need to talk about this.

"I just want to do it to show my respect for Ashling and for her family and friends."

"I just can't get my head around it," she added.

Meanwhile, residents of Palmerstown in west Dublin will also host a memorial walk for Ashling, starting outside Palmerstown House Pub at 4pm on Saturday, January 15.
