Ashley Young subject to vile racial abuse following Man Utd defeat to Barcelona

Manchester United captain Ashley Young was subjected to vile racist abuse following this side's defeat to Barcelona .

United were knocked out of the Champions League on Tuesday night as they were beaten 3-0 at the Nou Camp.

Lionel Messi scored twice for the La Liga leaders before a stunner from Philippe Coutinho wrapped up the victory.

It was a tough night for United and interim boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with his side now having lost five of their last seven matches.

Young, 33, was criticised by United supporters for his performance but some shocking social media abuse emerged after the final whistle.

Anti-racism campaigners Kick It Out retweeted some of the abuse sent the United captain's way, with Young branded a 'f****** n*****' and a 'disgusting ape c***'.

"Yet another black player, this time Ashley Young, targeted with racist abuse on social media after tonight’s Champions League game," their tweet read.

Kick It Out also called on Twitter to take serious action to tackle the 'rampant discrimination' on the social media channel.

Speaking after the defeat, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted his side have a long way to go to get to the level of Barca.

"If we want to get back to Manchester United's true level, true traditions, we have to challenge Barcelona," said Solskjaer.

"They were a couple of levels above over the two games.

"We want to play these games again next year, so we have a massive week coming up," Solskjaer added.

"There is no point dwelling on what could have been. We have to focus on that week."

United now face Everton on Sunday before hosting Manchester City in the derby at Old Trafford.
