Ashley Young contract: Man Utd offer one-year extension

Ashley Young has joined Juan Mata in being offered a one-year deal at Manchester United, while talks are ongoing with Ander Herrera.

Man Utd are trying to tie up the futures of their out-of-contract players – but negotiations have stalled over the failure to agree terms with the trio.

While the club are two thirds of the way through securing their three contract priorities – Luke Shaw, Anthony Martial and David de Gea – they have also been locked in talks over renewals for Young, Mata and Herrera.

Shaw became one of the highest paid defenders in Europe when signing a new deal in November – believed to be worth in excess of £150,000-a-week - and Martial has also agreed terms on a five-year extension, which will be confirmed imminently.

De Gea is now United’s main focus, with executive vice chairman Ed Woodward determined to resolve the goalkeeper’s future before a permanent manager is appointed at the end of the season.

But deals for Young, Mata and Herrera are still to be agreed, with all three able to talk with foreign clubs from now.

The one-year deals offered to Young and Mata reflect their age – 33 and 30 respectively – but neither has been accepted.

Herrera, at 29, is likely to be offered longer terms – particularly after becoming a pivotal part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s midfield.
