Ashley Williams linked with shock Premier League return after Everton release as bookmaker delivers cheeky put down

Wales Euro skipper Ashley Williams is being linked with a return to the Premier League less than 24 hours after being released by Everton.

The Sun report top-flight newcomers Sheffield United are considering a move for the 34-year-old centre-back.

Blades boss Chris Wilder needs know-how for his side's crack at the Premier League and Williams is one of the options he is considering.

Stoke City could also ask Williams to lead a planned promotion charge next season, after he spent the campaign just gone on loan there.

Williams' old club Swansea City could also be interested, while America is a further option.

Williams moved to Everton in a £12million move from Swansea City after excelling at Euro 2016.

But after doing well in his first season, he went down the Everton pecking order and barely featured this year.

Bookmaker Paddy Power delivered a cheeky put down upon hearing .

The Liverpool Echo report Williams Goodison career stalled when Ronald Koeman, the manager who signed him, was sacked.

Soon after Williams' frustrations got the better of him on a wild night against Lyon at Goodison where he sparked a brawl, and he was sent off at Burnley.

That proved to be his last act for the club.

Williams has lost his Wales place, and the captaincy. Chris Mepham and James Lawrence have become Wales' first choice defensive pairing under Ryan Giggs, with Gareth Bale expected to captain the side in today's crucial Euro 2020 qualifier with Croatia.

However, Williams remains desperate to regain his position in the centre of the Welsh defence and feels regular club football next season will help him in that goal, particularly if he is back in the Premier League.
