Chelsea legend Ashley Cole believes Mason Mount is one of Gareth Southgate's 'favourites'.
Mount started again for England and scored in their Nations League clash with Belgium this evening and former Blues and England defender Cole has spoken about why he is such a favourite of Southgate's.
“He has everything. He plays in the Chelsea team consistently, he seems to be one of Gareth’s favourites," said Cole on Sky Sports.
"He brings a lot of work ethic, desire - not just that, but now he brings quality on the ball.
"He’s willing to break lines without the ball and he connects the game well. He’s a fantastic player and for me, one of the best young midfielders in England right now.
“He’s got that ability to connect the midfield to a front three but he can play off either side of the wings because he has that game intelligence to come inside, pick up little pockets and little areas that he can’t mark. He can also finish when needed.”
Mount has started three times for Chelsea so far this season but faces a tough task to stay in Frank Lampard's starting XI after the arrivals of Kai Havertz and Hakim Ziyech.
Still only 21 years of age, Mount has already made nine appearances for the England senior squad.
He has racked up 40 league appearances for Chelsea, breaking through following his loan spell with Derby with Lampard in the 2018/19 season.
