Former left-back Ashley Cole believes Chelsea still need to add to their squad this summer to be able to compete with Liverpool and Manchester City next season.
Frank Lampard has already strengthened his ranks by landing Hakim Ziyech from Ajax and Timo Werner from RB Leipzig.
Securing Champions League football would also provide another feather in Chelsea's cap in their attempts to lure fresh faces to Stamford Bridge this summer.
A number of names have been linked, including Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Kai Havertz and Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak.
And when asked who has the better chance of catching Liverpool or City out of Chelsea and Manchester United next season, Cole believes it is Chelsea provided they strengthen this summer.
“Ole has had longer in charge of Man United and has had that transfer window and the chance to add quality and additions to his side,” he told BBC Sport before Chelsea’s clash with United in the FA Cup on Sunday.
“Chelsea haven’t, now they have and I think the signings they have brought in are very good and who knows if they are going to carry on and some more quality to the team.
“I think it is needed to fight against the Man City’s and the Liverpool’s and even the Manchester United’s."
