Former Chelsea defender Ashley Cole believes Frank Lampard’s organisation during the pause in Premier League action has benefited the Blues in the race for the top four.
The season was brought to a sudden halt in mid-March due to the coronavirus pandemic and teams were forced to train at home to keep up their fitness levels.
Cole, who played alongside Lampard for eight years at Stamford Bridge, believes his former team-mate’s organisation in the lockdown may have handed the Blues an advantage compared to their rivals.
Chelsea have won both of their Premier League matches since returning from the lockdown, as well as an FA Cup win against Leicester City.
“I think the momentum is with Chelsea at the moment,” Cole said on Sky Sports.
“A lot of credit has to go to Frank and his coaching team. We spoke probably a few shows ago about the expectation of Frank, could he do it coming from Derby, taking over a big club like Chelsea? The results have been great for him.
“I think he’s producing a lot of young talent, players like Billy Gilmour. Players, staff and hopefully Roman and Marina are happy with the job he’s done so far.
“I think he was well-organised in the lockdown - preparing the guys, making sure they’re ready to come back fit and sharp.
“They’re still fighting for a top-four spot. You’ve got Man United behind, Wolves behind. I think it comes down to the preparation he did during the lockdown.
“They’re not firing on all cylinders yet, but I think today will be a good game for them.”
The Blues take on West Ham United at the London Stadium this evening (Wednesday), as they look to increase their chances of Champions League football next season.
