Ashley Cole risks upsetting Leicester City fans with Ben Chilwell to Chelsea transfer admission

Ashley Cole has said he would love to see Ben Chilwell join Chelsea.

The England international has been heavily linked with a move to Stamford Bridge after impressing over the past 18 months at Leicester City and looks a certainty to make Gareth Southgate's Euro 2020 squad.

But will the new year bring about a big money move for the left-back?

Lampard delighted with transfer embargo being lifted

Whilst Leicester fans will be hoping that's not the case, Cole - arguably the best left-back of his generation - has said that Chilwell is good enough to make the step up to the Blues.

The west London outfit are able to make signings next month after having their two transfer window ban reduced last week.

Cole believes his former club need to add to their squad and has suggested Chilwell as a signing provided Leicester are willing to sell.

"I’d love to see him here," Cole told talkSPORT. "I think he’s a quality player. "I’ve heard he’s a Chelsea fan so yes I’d like to see him here. "It's a big decision for the club but quality-wise for sure he is good enough.

"But that depends on if he wants to leave or if Leicester will sell him – that’s something the clubs would need to talk about. There's always going to be a question mark going to a bigger club, but he's doing really, really well in terms of how he is playing with Leicester.

"He's obviously enjoying the way Brendan plays, and the system, he's got that licence to attack.

"In terms of quality, for sure he has the quality to be here. It's a big decision for the club but quality wise for sure he is good enough.

"I definitely think they need to add to the squad in terms of strength in depth really.

"But they also have to keep going and get these younger guys some more game time, get them more experienced."

Despite Cole's plea, it would appear that a move for Chilwell to Chelsea next month is firmly off the table following comments from Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers.

"If you're doing well, there will always be speculation," Rodgers told reporters. "The boys understand that.

"There'll be no-one leaving in January. Categorically."
