Ashley Cole explains how Thomas Tuchel pulled off masterclass with Chelsea's win over Fulham

Thomas Tuchel pulled off a masterclass with Kai Havertz during Chelsea's win over Fulham, according to Ashley Cole.

The Blues extended their lead in the race for fourth place with a 2-0 win against west London rivals Fulham at Stamford Bridge with Havertz scoring both of the goals.

Havertz again lined up in the striker role, as he has a number of times this season, and aided by the likes of Timo Werner and Mason Mount, he caused the relegation-threatened Cottagers issues all evening.

And former Blues defender Cole believes the move was a masterstroke from Tuchel, who foresaw how Chelsea could beat the Fulham press.

"I think [Thomas] Tuchel used Kai Havertz in the way, knowing Fulham want to press, he bypassed it," he told Sky Sports. "He played higher, in that more advanced role and linked off Mason Mount. He was fantastic.

"With his little deft touches and control around the box, he deserved his two goals."

Fellow pundit and former Wales boss Chris Coleman also spoke about Havertz's performance, adding: "His deft touches and intelligence, knowing where and when to run, he is not flustered. He is still young. He is going to get better and better.

"It's hard in your first season, but he has shown glimpses of top quality play."

Havertz had a difficult start to life at Chelsea after signing on an eye-watering transfer of around £72million from Bayer Leverkusen, contracting coronavirus early in his time at the club.

But the German, who is still only 21 years of age, is showing plenty of signs of coming good, scoring three and assisting once in his last three Premier League appearances.

That has taken his total across all competitions to eight goals and as many assists.
