Ashley Banjo tearful after Diversity win award for BLM dance that sparked complaints

Ashley Banjo got emotional as he thanked fans for their support after Diversity won the Must See Moment gong at The British Academy Television Awards for their moving Black Lives Matter dance routine

The lead star of the dance group, 32, took to the stage tonight at the 2021 ceremony and collected the shiny prize.

He appeared tearful as he told fans just how much their votes meant, and how their incredible support made a difference after the 2020 Britain's Got Talent performance struck up more than 24,000 Ofcom complaints - which the watchdog rejected.

It was only around four minutes long but sparked outrage from members of the public after it aired on September 5 last year.

Ofcom stated it wouldn't investigate the routine as the dance didn’t raise issues that warranted examination under its broadcasting regulations.

Speaking to the crowd, he said: “This is so much more than just an award, thanks to everyone who voted for us, it means so much. Thanks to everyone who stood by us. Every phone call, text, comment, you guys made a difference to what was a really dark time, being in a storm of 30,000 complaints and a torrent of racially charged abuse. It was a dark time but that support made a difference.

“And in a way I have to say thank you to the people that complained. You showed the truth, you showed why this performance and this moment was necessary. But for all of those people, take a look. This is what change looks like."

“Lets keep having those difficult conversations and keep standing up for what is right.”
