Ashington flat fire: One dead after blaze rips through home on Milburn Road

A blaze has ripped through a first floor flat, leaving one person dead.

Fire crews were called to Milburn Road in Ashington at just after 11.40pm last night after the fire broke out.

When firefighters from  Pegswood and West Hartford stations arrived they found the flames had spread throughout the entire first floor and roof of the property.

While carrying out a search the crews found a body. The person was pronounced dead at the scene.

A Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said she could not confirm the age, gender or identity of the deceased at this stage.

Crews were at the scene for more than an hour. The fire did not spread to neighbouring properties.

An investigation is now underway to determine the cause of the blaze.

Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service is now also urging residents to check smoke detectors are in good working condition.

Crews have returned to the scene to  provide  advice to the public and ensure they have escape plans in place in case of a fire.
