The wisteria trees are in full bloom in Ashikaga Flower Park, producing a spectacular shower of purple flowers at the botanical garden popular with tourists in Ashikaga, Tochigi Prefecture.
Visitors wearing masks were seen Wednesday enjoying the purple fantasy of the 160,000 strands of flowers hanging from the massive wisteria trellises, spread out over an area of 2,000 square meters. This year marks the earliest that the wisteria are in full bloom since the park first opened in 1997.
Last year, the park was forced to temporarily close for about a month from the mid-April when a state of emergency was declared in response to a surge in coronavirus infections. This year, the doors have remained open as the park implements countermeasures.
"The scene is like a dream, with the flowers spreading out in bright purple," said a 58-year-old man from Saitama Prefecture, who was visiting the park with his family.
