The Islamic State has become an issue in the Nebraska 2nd Congressional District race between Democratic Rep. Brad Ashford and Republican Don Bacon.
Ashford recently accused Bacon of "fear-mongering" in his latest ad, in which he slams Ashford for being unaware ISIS has targeted Nebraska, the Omaha World-Herald reported.
"If Brad Ashford doesn't know ISIS is targeting Nebraska, how can we trust him to keep us safe?" a narrator asks in the ad released by Bacon's campaign this week.
Bacon said Ashford is failing in his duty to protect Nebraska by not knowing ISIS targeted a Nebraska city last year on an alleged "kill list."
Ashford's campaign then accused Bacon of doing the Islamic State's bidding by spreading propaganda online to raise fear.
"It is unbelievably shameless that a retired general who purports to live by an honor code would continue to use fear-mongering ISIS propaganda in a campaign ad," said Sam Barrett, Ashford's campaign manager.
The Islamic State's "kill list" names thousands of Americans in more than 50 cities, and circulated on social media and several websites.
Police notified many people on the lists but no one has been attacked by the Islamic State.
