Ashfield residents warned to be vigilant as district passes landmark figure of Covid cases

Ashfield councillors have urged residents to "be vigilant" as the district surpassed 20,000 positive Covid cases.

According to government figures released last week, since March 2020, 20,081 residents have now tested positive with the virus.

432 cases have resulted in deaths in the district.

These latest figures confirm that, apart from Nottingham City, Ashfield has had the most postitive Covid cases in the county since the pandemic began.

Council leader Jason Zadrozny has urged residents to remain vigilant with Covid cases still relatively high.

Councillor Zadrozny said: “Whilst positive COVID cases are less than they were a month ago – they still remain high.

"We have just over 120,000 residents in our District, 1 in 6 of who have now tested positive for COVID.

"COVID-19 has and continues to touch the lives of so many people in Ashfield.

"Everybody knows somebody who has tested positive.

"I would repeat my call for people to remain vigilant, wear face masks where appropriate and maintain social distancing where they can.

"To put these figures into perspective – people testing positive for COVID in Ashfield could have filled Mansfield Town’s football ground more than twice over.”

Ashfield also has the second-highest mortality rate for people in the area who catch Covid - with 2.15% of people dying from the disease. Only Broxtowe is higher, with 2.18%.

One in six people within the Ashfield district have tested positive for the coronavirus at some point.

Councillor Zadrozny added: “We continue to work with the NHS and other health bosses to increase visits from the vaccination bus.

"We have suggested several sites for visits from the bus where vaccination levels are low including the George Street Club, Hucknall and outside Hucknall Library, the Tin Hat Centre, Selston and Skegby and Stanton Hill Library.”

Just over a month ago the government confirmed that Ashfield the fourth-highest Covid rates throughout the UK.

While numbers have since decreased, councillors are still quick to point out the dangers that the virus still poses to the district.

John Wilmott, councillor for Ashfield Independents and Ward for Hucknall North, said: "I'm still concerned that it continues to be a problem in our area.

"I plead with people to be very careful and vigilant and wear a mask when it is the right thing to do, even in shops, eccetera.

"I think we have got to help ourselves and elderley people who need more help getting through this."
