Ashfield MP admits 'mistake' over 4-month expired car MOT

A Nottinghamshire MP has defended himself after images appeared on social media suggesting his car's MOT expired four months ago.

Lee Anderson, who represents Ashfield for the Conservatives, said he made a "mistake" by forgetting to renew the MOT on his Ford Kuga, which expired on January 18, 2020.

Mr Anderson says he normally receives a text message from his Ford garage to book it in for its MOT, but that he did not receive the text.

He adds that he has "hardly used" the car since he was elected as Ashfield MP in December 2019, but that he has booked it in for its test after images circulated on Facebook.

"My car is a mistake, I had no idea the MOT has run out", he told Nottinghamshire Live.

"I get a text every year from the Ford garage to book it in. This year I have not had a text and it slipped my mind.

"The car has a full service record and is in excellent condition. After being elected I hardly used it.

"But I accept I have made a mistake by not checking and I would like to thank the Ashfield Independent campaigner for checking my car out and letting me know by posting it all over Facebook.

"My car is now booked in."

When the government announced the coronavirus lockdown on March 23, it also revealed that any MOTs due around this time would receive an automatic six-month extension.

However, this was only valid for vehicles with MOTs due after the lockdown came into effect.
