Ashfield Girls' High School talks about the importance of the Eastside Awards

Ashfield Girls' High School has been an avid supporter of the Eastside Awards since its inception 7 years ago, with winners in the categories of Teacher of the Year, Young Person of the Year, Volunteer of the Year and most recently were recognised for their Community Impact during Covid.

As a school in the heart of East Belfast, they are very proud of their roots and origins-built in 1948 in a prefabricated style by Short Brothers and Harland-iconic cornerstones of East Belfast. The school has served the East Belfast community for over 70 years and this is one of the reasons why they are so invested in the Eastside Awards -it shares the school's ethos of being proud of all things, 'East!'

Tracy Rosborough of Ashfield said:

"Having taught in the school for 30 years, I have had the privilege of working with thousands of pupils who join us as young girls and leave us as mature young ladies-their heritage beginning in East Belfast with many going ‘full circle’ and returning to their roots to give back to the same communities which supported them in their educational journeys."

As a school, they have worked closely with East Belfast establishments such as Kainos, East Belfast Partnership, Urban Villages and Orchardville to name just a few and their students have benefitted immensely from partnerships such as these in the form of work placements, training and development and invaluable funding for tutoring and revision sessions. They have relied on local businesses to accommodate students for work experience, welcomed practical free hands-on creative digital and filmmaking course at the Strand Arts Centre as well as the hosting of pupil films and premieres in the iconic Strand Cinema itself.

The family of one former pupil, Krizzah Policarpio, a winner in the Young Person category and filmmaker, made their home in the east, and being part of this dynamic community led to Krizzah fulfilling her lifelong dream of visiting Los Angeles. This came to realisation in part because of her fundraising efforts in the area along with sponsorship and contributions from local businesses and organisations such as the Secret Day Spa, Clements Coffee and Belfast City Airport. But the Eastside Awards aren’t just about recognising effort, expertise and excellence-they teach us something much more crucial-the importance of ‘giving something back’ to this great area, evidenced when Krizzah returned the favours given to her by undertaking the filming of the subsequent Eastside Awards promotional video!

Nominations for this year's Eastside awards close on Friday, so you must be quick if you want to nominate! Click here to submit your nomination.
