Ashfield family's NHS praise after newborn baby suffers stroke at 4 days old

A new mum has praised the hospital staff who saved her son's life after he had a stroke at just four days old.

Lucas Robert Charlie Bellamy was born at King's Mill Hospital on April 5, weighing 8lb 15oz.

His parents Kerry-Ann and Scott Bellamy, besotted by the new addition to their family, brought him back to their Sutton-in-Ashfield home to meet siblings Robyn, 6, and Harry, 4.

And for two days the young family thought the newborn baby was absolutely fine.

However, by April 9 baby Lucas had "turned blue" - forcing them to rush back to King's Mill Hospital via an ambulance.

This is where tests revealed that, not only had baby Lucas suffered a mild stroke, he also had a hole in his heart and Down's syndrome.

Kerry-Ann, 30, has relived the moments the family thought their baby might die.

"Absolutely over the moon and beaming with pride, we went home two days after his birth where our other two children waited impatiently to meet him", she told Nottinghamshire Live.

"They were besotted and it was love at first sight for them.

"But we got two days at home with him before things took a turn for the worst.

"His hands and feet turned blue and around his mouth and nose too. The ambulance came quickly and by that time Lucas became unresponsive.

"The ambulance crew did a quick check, and not happy with his responses rushed us into the ambulance and blue-lighted us to hospital.

"They could not get us there quick enough and I knew when he snatched Lucas from my arms and ran him into resuscitation, it was serious."

The family spent a total of six days in King's Mill Hospital, where Lucas underwent numerous blood tests and scans.

This is when the worst was revealed about the newborn's condition.

"An MRI scan revealed that our boy had a small stroke and a small hole in his heart", the support care worker added.

"With genetic tests we found out he also has Down's syndrome.

"We were shocked, with all the things we had discussed during my pregnancy, none of it is what we expected to come back.

"He had a scan on his heart during pregnancy and they were concerned about it, but they said it was actually a small stroke that caused him to be hospitalised.

"But the Down's syndrome was more of a shock, as I had him tested before he was born and it came through as low risk."

Baby Lucas is now back at the family's Sutton-in-Ashfield home, where mum Kerry-Ann says he is "doing really well".

She has thanked the NHS staff who "worked tirelessly" to support both the mother and the son, saying he "might not have been here without them".

"We are home now and he at this time seems to be thriving, feeding well and putting on weight", she added. "We are just taking each day as it comes.

"All the NHS staff at King's Mill Hospital, from the ambulance crew that came for us, to the resuscitation team and our last stop at Ward 25, were phenomenal.

"In such hard circumstances with Covid-19 things are not easy at this time.

"But those key workers did everything within their power to keep my boy and myself safe and helped bring my boy back to me.

"We will be forever grateful, and it's because of them we are home and safe and a family again."
