Ashfield District Council Hucknall Central by-election candidates confirmed

Candidates have been confirmed for an upcoming Ashfield District Council by-election, with a care assistant and a local campaigner among those taking part. A vote will be held on Wednesday (November 23), electing someone to represent Hucknall Central at Ashfield District Council, following the death of former councillor Jim Bladgen.

The local Conservatives say they will be announcing their candidate soon, but the Labour Party and the Ashfield Independents have both selected candidates. For the Ashfield Independents, Nick Parvin, a care assistant who lives in Hucknall and who is studying for a Master's Degree, will be running for office.

Mr Parvin said: "I'd like to thank members for putting their faith in me. Jim Blagden was a hugely popular councillor who will be a hard act to follow."

In terms of his priorities for the area, Mr Parvin added that "fighting to make Hucknall a safer place is a big priority." He highlighted problems including the closure of Hucknall's police station and local police funding.

The Labour Party has selected John Wilkinson as its candidate for the election. The party says that Mr Wilkinson will be a "vocal, dedicated and visible councillor for Hucknall Central."

Mr Wilkinson said: "I'm standing to represent the ward I have lived in for 17 years. I love our town and believe the people of Hucknall Central deserve better representation on Ashfield District Council."
