Ashfield Conservative candidate caught asking friend to be a swing voter for cameras

The Conservative candidate in Ashfield has been caught on camera setting up an acquaintance to act as a ‘swing voter’ in front of cameras.

Lee Anderson, who is standing in the ultra-marginal seat of Ashfield, was filmed by veteran journalist Michael Crick.

Before he goes to knock on some doors in the constituency, Mr Anderson is recorded on his mobile saying: “Don't make out that you don't know who I am... you know I'm the candidate, but not a friend, alright?"

He appeared to be unaware he was still wearing a radio mic, and had walked away from the interviewer.

Once he returns to the interviewer Mr Anderson says the call was about "some leaflets that have just come for me".

Shortly afterwards, they head to the door of a voter, who says: "There's no way Labour are ever going to get my vote again."

He then backed Mr Anderson's infamous

Earlier in the campaign, Mr Anderson caused controversy in a video by suggesting tenants on the Carsic Estate who commit anti-social behaviour should be made to live in tents, given cold showers and made to do manual work.

Labour have said the proposals amount to labour camps.

After referencing the video about social housing tenants the voter goes further, suggesting nuisance social housing tenants receive the ‘cat o’ nine tails’ - a severe form of whipping - and are made to wear pink tutus.

The phone call in which the exchange was set up was only discovered after the footage was reviewed by the Daily Mail, which was filming Mr Crick.

Mr Anderson has been contacted for comment.

The candidates standing in Ashfield are

Lee Anderson, Conservative Party

Martin Edward Daubney, Brexit Party

Natalie Sarah Fleet, Labour Party

Rebecca Karen Wain, Liberal Democrats

Rose Woods, Green Party

Jason Bernard  Zadrozny, Ashfield Independents Putting People Before Politics
