Steve Smith admits he is “proud” and “lost for words” after inspiring Australia’s fightback on day one of the opening Ashes Test at Edgbaston.
The former captain produced a stunning century against England before eventually being bowled by Stuart Broad for 144 as the tourists recovered from 122/8 to post 284.
Smith, like David Warner and Cameron Bancroft were heckled by the home crowd for their part in the 2018 ball-tampering scandal.
And an emotional Smith claimed he was speechless after his outstanding performance.
“It’s been a long time coming. I’m lost for words,” Smith said in the press conference after day one.
“I’m just really proud I was able to help pull the team out of trouble.”
There was relief for Smith, who admitted it was one of the most difficult experiences in his career.
“I don’t think I’ve ever been as nervous batting,” Smith admitted.
“It hasn’t really sunk in yet. I’m really proud of the way I’ve been able to stand up today.
“It’s been a while since I could put on the whites and the baggy green for Australia.
“We were in a bit of trouble on a wicket that wasn’t that easy, a little bit of swing at times.
“I had to dig, I thought Sid played beautifully and Nathan Lyon, who said, ‘that’s the most nervous I’ve been batting’ when I got to 100.
“I’m thankful he was able to dig deep and help me get there as well.”
