Ashes 2019: Amazing escape for Joe Root as James Pattinson delivery hits stumps... but bails remain intact

Joe Root had a miraculous escape on the second morning of the opening Ashes Test as the ball shaved his off stump but failed to dislodge the bails.

With England 53/1 before lunch, James Pattinson thought he had found Root's edge and the umpire Joel Wilson initially gave the England captain out caught behind when the ball carried through to Tim Paine.

However, Root, who was on a conservative nine runs from 40 balls in at No3, immediately reviewed the decision and replays showed the ball had indeed evaded his bat instead brushing the top of off stump on its way through.

The impact was so minimal that the bail remained in place, though the stump was nudged slightly out of position.

The on-field decision was eventually overturned and Root remained in the middle with Rory Burns as England continued their response to Austrailia's first innings total of 284 on the opening day.
