Ashcroft's approach to overcoming Lions' late wobbles

Levi Ashcroft is adamant the Brisbane Lions' flag defence isn't flagging but admits higher-percentage avenues to goal will help address their fourth-quarter struggles.

The Lions will host GWS at the Gabba on Saturday, their first meeting since a 44-point semi-final comeback paved the way to a remarkable premiership.

At 9-3-1 and second, the Lions' title defence is on track despite them coughing up three-quarter time leads in three of their last five games.

North Melbourne were unlucky to draw after dominating the final term, then Melbourne came from 14 points down to win comfortably at the Gabba.

On Friday it was the Lions who dominated the final stages, but failed to convert that into points, after the Crows had overturned a lead and then clung on to win by five points.

"We still had a good last quarter ... 20 inside 50s with 10, 11 shots on goal but only eight points," Ashcroft said.

"So I don't think we're playing bad (final) quarters, just need to finish off our work.

"Trying to kick more goals from better inside-50s.

"Some of the time we go in a bit low on percentage, so just try and get better shots, as a team."

Ashcroft, who turns 19 in December, has played all 13 games in his rookie season and averages 21 touches to go with five goals.

The No.5 pick, brother to star midfielder Will and son of former club great Marcus, was watching in Melbourne when the Lions beat the Giants last season.

"We've seen a few clips from the Giants and ourselves," he said when asked if they'd put the replay on this week.

"We mainly like to focus on what we do with the ball and on defence and in the contest. I feel like that's where the game is going to be won this weekend."

Defender Keidean Coleman (quad) was running laps on Thursday and still several weeks away from a return but Brandon Starcevich (concussion), Oscar McInerney (managed) and Sam Day (hamstring) are all available for selection.
