Asda worker pays for elderly man's shopping after he falls ill in the supermarket

A shop assistant has been praised after she paid for an elderly man’s shopping when he fell unwell.

Tracy, who works at the Asda store in Coventry, stepped in when a 90-year-old man felt faint while out getting his groceries.

Caring Tracy first got a chair for him before sorting a wheelchair to help him back to his car.

Whilst he was sat down she went back to the story and finished his shopping before paying for it herself and carefully packing it up, Coventry Live reported.

The poorly man’s daughter was so impressed with the service she wrote a letter to personally thank her dad’s saviour .

She wrote: “I managed to convince Tracy to take the money for the shopping which she reluctantly agreed to. She then accompanied us back to our car in the pouring rain to assist.

"I cannot commend her actions enough as she typifies the sort of help and support you need when something untoward happens."

Tracy has now been nominated for an Asda customer service award for her selfless deed.

Store manager Marc said: "It was just brilliant of Tracy.

“She always goes the extra mile for customers who are in need.

"She is a down-to-earth colleague and nothing is too much trouble for her."

Earlier this year another Asda worker also went above and beyond for a customer when a man in his early 70s was unable to pay for his goods.

The customer’s card refused to work and as he had left his wallet at home, feared he would have to leave the store empty handed.

Wendy WIlson, who has worked at the Nuneaton Asda branch for 22 years, stepped in and insisted on paying for the items, worth around £10.

It comes as the brand announced it was changing its Smart Price name (Manchester Family / MEN)

He was so taken with the gesture he later returned with a bouquet of flowers to say thank you.

A colleague said: “This lady is a one in a million.

“She is a fantastic role model towards her fellow colleagues who always comes in with a big smile on her face.

“She always goes out of her way to help everybody; we call her Happy Wendy.

"We are all so proud of her.”

It comes as the chain is set to scrap its Smart Price range and replace it with a new budget range called Just Essentials.

The supermarket said Just Essentials would be the "largest budget-friendly essentials range in the market" and will help millions of families fight rising living costs.

The supermarket's cheapest range is currently Smart Price , with around 150 items.

But soon Asda will phase out Smart Price and bring in Just Essentials, with around 300 products.

The Just Essentials range will include fresh meat, fish and poultry, bakery, frozen food and cupboard staples.
