Asda worker 'heartbroken' after being sacked for sharing Billy Connolly joke

A supermarket worker was sacked by his employer when he shared a Billy Connolly post which mentioned "suicide bombers".

54-year-old Brian Leach is upset by his dismissal from Asda which he held for nearly five years.

The disabled man worked on a checkout till in Mill Street West, Dewsbury and claims he was 'grassed-up' by an Asian female employee who worked for Asda's head office.

He said: "She was upset. I was aware that she was upset.

"I was then pulled into a meeting a couple of weeks later on 9 May in Dewsbury and then on Wednesday, 19 June, I was summarily dismissed without notice following a disciplinary meeting for breaching the company's social media policy.

"I'm really upset and I would love to know what Billy Connolly would think about what has happened to me.

"I didn't have enough money to join a union so I have not been able to appeal the decision.

"I have to go into Asda today (Mon) to give back my two discount cards and my locker key."

Our colleagues at ExaminerLive have seen the letter from Asda informing Mr Leach of his dismissal for gross misconduct.

It says that he admitted the post was offensive, that he removed it and apologised to affected colleagues.

The letter states he committed a gross misconduct offence.

It says his post has the 'potential to bring the company into disrepute'.

Mr Leach's revelation that he had been sacked led to him receiving more than 150 comments on his Facebook account many of them expressing disbelief and annoyance at how he had been treated.

An Asda spokesman said: "We would never comment on individual circumstances.

"However we do not tolerate any form of discrimination from colleagues or customers and take such behaviour extremely seriously.”
