Asda urges households not to panic-buy

Asda has issued an update to its millions of shoppers following the latest lockdown changes.

Under the new measures, which were first introduced last March, all non-essential shops must close but supermarkets can remain open and people leave their home to pick up essentials.

During the first lockdown, shelves were left empty as people stockpiled items and stores had to give some products buying limits.

But in the latest update, Asda has urged households not to panic-buy as it insisted it has "strong product availability across stores and depots".

A spokesperson said: "Asda is also asking customers to play their part by continuing to shop considerately and not buy more than they normally would."

Roger Burnley, Asda chief executive, said: "As Covid restrictions are tightened across the UK to protect our health, we will continue to do all we can to keep colleagues and customers safe in store as we have since the start of the pandemic.

"Our stores and distribution centres have proved to be highly resilient to the challenges of a national lockdown and we are confident that we can continue to deliver choice and value for customers in the weeks ahead. We are asking customers can play their part too by continuing to shop considerately and respecting social distancing when they visit our stores."

The chain is also upping its online capacity as well as doubling the size of its partnership with Uber Eats in the coming weeks.

This means shoppers at 200 stores will be able to order items for delivery within 30 minutes.
