Asda has brought in a dedicated shopping period for elderly and vulnerable customers to shop at its supermarkets before the rest of the public are allowed in.
The supermarket says it has become ‘increasingly clear’ that it vulnerable communities need to be protected in the coronavirus pandemic.
On Friday, Asda’s larger supermarkets will be reserved for the elderly, vulnerable and those who care for them, until 9am.
It means those who are most at risk can shop from 6am to 9am at Asda’s big supermarkets in Byker and Gosforth, Newcastle. The scheme will be operating on Friday March 20 at larger Asda supermarkets which are usually open before 9am.
Asda says: “So – if you’re in a vulnerable group and need to get your shopping – or are caring for someone in a vulnerable group, we’ll do everything we can to support you in stores on Friday morning before 9am.”
Asda is also closing non-essential services, like its hot food and pizza counters, to free up warehouse space for essential items.
Its 24-hour stores will be shut between midnight and 6am.
Asda has also placed purchase limits on in demand items.
In a message to customers, Asda CEO Roger Burnley added: "To our other customers, please help us do this by leaving your shopping until later in the day. We’re doing everything we can to keep our shelves stocked and our deliveries coming – and our colleagues are doing an amazing job working around the clock to support you. Please let us help you – together, we can look after each other during these challenging"
