Asda to introduce coronavirus safety marshals to ensure Scots are wearing face coverings

Asda will deploy ‘safety marshals’ at Scots supermarkets to ensure that all customers are wearing face coverings as they enter the store.

The supermarket giant announced that 1,000 members of staff will take the roles across all of its shops in the UK.

They will be mainly based at the front of the store, while some will be dotted up and down in aisles at larger supermarkets.

Anyone who is spotted without a face covering will be offered a pack of disposable ones, which customers can buy at the end of their shop.

Marshals will also ensure that social distancing is maintained and will provide shoppers with sanitised baskets and trolleys as they enter the store.

Asda will also install more hand sanitising stations and increase hygiene measures in a bid to protect customers and workers.

It is hoped that the raft of changes will help make the customer experience "even safer" during the coronavirus pandemic.

Anthony Hemmerdinger, chief operating officer at Asda said: “We know that safety remains a key priority for our customers and we will continue to do all we can to keep them and our colleagues safe in store, as we have since the start of the pandemic.

“These additional measures will make our stores an even safer place to shop and work during the coming months.”

The changes come just after new restrictions were announced in Scotland amid a recent rise in the number of coronavirus infections.

Households will no longer be allowed to meet inside someone’s house while pubs, bars and restaurants will be ordered to close at 10pm from Friday.

Scotland recorded its highest ever daily rise of coronavirus cases on Wednesday. A total of 486 peple tests positive for Covid-19 over the last 24 hours.
