Asda to bring in 1,000 COVID safety marshals to enforce rules and make sure people wear a mask

Supermarket giant Asda is to bring in 1,000 COVID marshals to ensure supermarket shoppers abide by rules and wear a mask.

According to Asda, the safety marshals will mainly guard the front of the shop, while some will patrol the inside of the store and aisles.

The COVID marshals will work to ensure customers don't enter the store without a mask and will offer shoppers without a temporary one that they can pay for with their shopping.

The news comes as supermarkets, including Asda, brought in new changes amid soaring cases and fears of panic buying.

Asda COVID marshals will also work to ensure customers have sanitised baskets and maintain social distancing, to make the store "even safer" during the pandemic.

Anthony Hemmerdinger, chief operating officer at Asda said: “We know that safety remains a key priority for our customers and we will continue to do all we can to keep them and our colleagues safe in store, as we have since the start of the pandemic.

"These additional measures will make our stores an even safer place to shop and work during the coming months.”
