Asda to add 1,000 coronavirus safety marshals to enforce hygiene and face covering rules

Supermarket giant Asda has introduced additional measures at its store to ensure customers abide by social distancing rules.

The supermarket is bringing in 1,000 safety marshals to guard the front of the shop and patrol inside the store and aisles.

The Covid marshals will make sure customers don't enter without a mask and will offer shoppers a temporary one that they can pay for with their shopping.

They will also be ensuring customers have sanitised baskets and maintain social distancing to make the store "even safer".

Workers will also now be wearing face coverings unless they have an exemption.

Morrisons is also believed to be introducing similar measures with 494 stores already staffed with marshals on the doors.

The marshals are tasked with greeting customers, monitoring the number of people in stores and making customers aware of where they can get free hand and trolley sanitiser.

Anthony Hemmerdinger, chief operating officer at Asda said: “We know that safety remains a key priority for our customers and we will continue to do all we can to keep them and our colleagues safe in store, as we have since the start of the pandemic.

"These additional measures will make our stores an even safer place to shop and work during the coming months.”
