Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury's shoppers share the worst substitutes they've been given after online shops

Online shopping is more popular than ever.

With the coronavirus lockdown in full swing people have been using supermarket home delivery and click and collect services more than ever.

The beauty of them is that you can do your weekly shop from the comfort of your own sofa.

But like anything, they're not quite perfect yet.

With demand for certain items high and the stock from the likes of Asda, Sainsbury's and Tesco still recovering from panic buying in March, inevitably some of the things we order aren't always available.

And instead of just leaving them off our orders altogether, some supermarkets offer substitutions.

For the most part these are rather sensible. But as our sister title KentLive reports, they are sometimes downright ridiculous!

Posting on Facebook group Reduce Your Supermarket Spend, Asda customer Jade Browne kicked off the conversation with a picture of her latest, rather odd food swap.

She asked: "What’s the worst substitutes you’ve had??

"Can’t wait to get my eight bags of prawn crackers instead of the Chinese box.

"Me and my husband did have a laugh this morning!!"

Her post on April 30 has captured the attention of many others, collecting more than 900 replies and over 1,000 reactions.

One replied: " Asda are hilarious for subs.

"I ordered Halloween sweets and got a load of kinder eggs. But I've heard from drivers things like a bunch of Roses instead of chocolate Roses."

Another said: "I ordered a birthday cake and candles and they gave me a birthday cake and substituted the candles for 50 scented tea lights!!"

A third added: "I ordered sunflower oil they sent me an actual sunflower. I wouldn’t have cared if it was vegetable oil."

And a fourth wrote: "Ordered some latex gloves once they sent me condoms instead."

And it wasn't just Asda sending out questionable substitutes either, it appears Sainsbury's  and Tesco were at it too.

There were stories of vegan food being swapped for dairy alternatives, bread sticks arriving in place of tampons and squash as a substitute for beer.

One said: "I ordered frozen fish and Sainsbury's replaced with fabric softener."

A second wrote: "I ordered BBQ lighter fuel and got a Freddo chocolate egg from Tesco."

And a third remembered: "I ordered a vegetarian three course meal from  Tesco. They replaced it with a single bag of spinach.

"The driver and I couldn’t stop laughing when we spotted it."

Some helpful commentators  did point out that you can turn off substitutions if you wish at most supermarkets.

However others were just enjoying the thread and having a chuckle at the "hilarious" swaps.
