ASDA shoppers furious over supermarket's response to £10 sofa glitch

Yesterday, shoppers around the UK couldn't believe their luck after a glitch on the ASDA website meant they were able to buy a brand new sofa for £10.

The sofas, which usually cost £375, were showing up as £10 on the ASDA website and, unsurprisingly, people took advantage while they could - with some ordering a few.

The sofas were so cheap, in fact, they cost less than the delivery - which is priced at £14.75.

Writing on Twitter last night, one person said: "Loooooooool ASDA don’t realise that a discount will strip everyone of their common sense, you think I won’t buy a sofa and put it in my bathroom?"

Another wrote: "Did I just purchase a sofa from asda for £14? Yes. Do I already have a sofa? Yes."

"Really hope Asda honour this sofa order," said a third.

The joy was, however, short-lived, as ASDA quickly began to cancel peoples' orders, leaving them VEXED.

What made people even more angry, though, was ASDA's admission that the sofa had not been available to buy for quite some time.

A message sent to one customer read: "Good Morning, I hope you are well. Due to a glitch in the system, it showed a sofa we have not sold for quite some time now. We fixed it as quickly as possible and have processed a refund alongside cancelling the order due to not being able to fulfil it."

The rules about pricing errors on the George at ASDA website read: "We reserve the right to change prices on the George Website at any time without notice to you. We make every effort to ensure that prices shown are accurate when you place your order.

"If within 14 days of you placing your order on the George Website, a pricing error is found in respect of any of the items you have ordered but which have not yet been dispatched, we will notify you as soon as possible and offer you the option of:

  • placing a new order at the correct price for the mis-priced item(s);
  • cancelling your order for the mis-priced item(s); or
  • cancelling the whole of your order.
  • If, within 7 days of receipt of our notice to you, you have not responded by selecting one of the available options above then:
  • if all of the items you have ordered are found to be mis-priced, the entire order will be cancelled automatically and we will refund or re-credit you for any sum you have paid for those items; or
  • if only some of the items you have ordered are found to be mis-priced, we will deliver the correctly priced items but we will not supply you with the mis-priced items. In these circumstances we will refund or re-credit you for any sum you have paid for the mis-priced items."
