Asda shopper says 'I’m from England, I don’t need to wear a mask' at Welsh store

An Asda shopper in Wales reportedly told a member of staff who asked him to wear a mask: "I’m from England, I don’t need to wear a mask."

All remaining legal restrictions were lifted in England on Monday, including the mandatory wearing of masks in indoor settings.

But in Wales, all restrictions still remain.

First Minister Mark Drakeford confirmed last Wednesday that almost all coronavirus rules in Wales will be lifted on August 7, but said the wearing of face masks will remain compulsory on public transport and in most indoor settings.

With the two nations operating under different policies, there has been some confusion around face-covering restrictions.

Last week, Asda came under fire for wrongly saying it was no longer mandatory to wear masks at a Welsh store, reports North Wales Live.

This week a shopper at Tesco said a staff member told her at another Welsh store that masks were "down to the individual" - but the chain has clarified this is not the policy and all staff have had "clear guidance that our rules on face-coverings in Wales have not changed".

Meanwhile, at Asda in Kinmel Bay, North Wales, one local shopper says he saw staff trying to enforce the mask rules - leading to a row with a family.

He told North Wales Live: “There was a family in Liverpool kits arguing with a staff member. The man said ‘I’m from England, I don’t need to wear a mask’.

"I was going to interject to say he was misguided about the rules but he didn’t look the type to rationalise with.”

A Tesco spokesperson said: “Since the start of the pandemic, we have focused on ensuring everyone can get the food they need in a safe environment and, in line with the latest Welsh Government guidelines, it remains mandatory for customers and colleagues to wear face coverings in our Welsh stores unless exempt.

“We also continue to have safety measures in place in our stores that we introduced at the start of the pandemic; these include limiting the number of people in store at any time, protective screens at every checkout, hand sanitiser stations and regular cleaning.”
