Asda shopper has to 'double take' after being charged £600 for a box of croissants

An Asda customer got the shock of his life when a 'reduced' box of croissants turned out to be more than he bargained for.

The man had picked up the bakery treat in the reduced section, which he believed were were going to cost under a pound. But it was only when he scanned the items through that the price was revealed on screen.

The shopper had popped into an Asda store in Warrington for a few 'bits' and couldn't resist the tempting offer when he saw the price had been reduced from £1.70 to just 60p, reports the Liverpool Echo.

The man, who wishes to remain anonymous, said the packet of two Asda Extra Special almond croissants were perfect for his breakfast the following morning.

But putting them through the self-checkout, he almost paid a staggering £617.91 for the pleasure.

He said: "It was a good job I did a double take, I was very close to just tapping my card without checking. The member of staff and myself both saw the funny side of it though. Imagine if I hadn't noticed, they'd have had to have been the best croissants of my life."

Thankfully, he didn't have to pay nearly £618 for his planned breakfast and the item was voided after the man called a nearby member of staff over. Responding to the incident, an Asda spokesperson said the incorrect price was a "complete anomaly", caused by a smudged barcode. They added: "We know our croissants are good, but we agree £617 might be pushing it!

"This looks to have been a one-off caused by a smudged or damaged barcode that has scanned incorrectly and we've checked our other yellow sticker products at this store and not found any other issues.

"Thankfully this was spotted and rectified by our colleague immediately, and we hope this customer enjoyed their croissants knowing he only paid 60p for them in the end."
