Asda 'set to launch first ever loyalty card giving Scots discounts on groceries'

Asda is reportedly set to launch its first ever loyalty card scheme that will allow Scot to save money on groceries.

The supermarket giant is seeking to expand its current George Rewards scheme, which gives customers points to spend on homeware and clothing.

A new loyalty card, which is expected to trialled later this year, will reward customers for spending on groceries at the store.

It is hoped that such a card will compete against the likes of Tesco and Sainsbury’s, who have had similar schemes in place for a number of years.

The scheme will be reportedly similar to that of a Tesco Clubcard (PA)

A source told The Sun newspaper: “It would be a move welcomed by customers.

“Other supermarket giants have loyalty card schemes and it allows shoppers to rack up savings throughout the year.

“Asda is already very competitively priced and this way money will go even further for hardworking families.”

Bosses are said to be in talks over the name of the scheme and how it would work in stores.

The scheme is likely to be available digitally through a smartphone.

A spokesperson for Asda said: “For over 50 years we’ve driven loyalty with our customers by offering great value and range on the things that matter most to them - and whenever we have anything new to share, we will tell them about it first.”

The news comes after Asda announced that it would ban all plastic fruit and veg bags from its Scottish stores in a drive to plastic pollution.

Customers will be able to pay 30p for a reusable alternative - which is made from 100% recycled plastic water bottles.
