A Victim Impact Statement, completed by security guard Mark Roberts will be read out in public when Smith, of Ford Lane in Litherland, is sentenced.

Judge Menary, QC, the Recorder of Liverpool, told him: "We are adjourning this case so probation can complete a report which is limited to an assessment of the risk you present in the future and whether the court should make a determination of dangerousness."

Smith has a criminal record for a previous robbery offence.

He ordered Smith to appear in the dock for his sentencing.

That will take place in early June.

After the wounding, a spokesperson for Asda said: "We take the safety of our customers and colleagues very seriously and are currently assisting police with their enquiries.”
