ASDA security guard goes viral after supermarket shopper nearly dies in freak accident

An ASDA security guard has gone viral for his quick thinking after a shopper almost died in a sudden fire.

Security guard Richard - who works at the Birkenhead store - had to act quickly when a shopper's car burst into flames right outside the supermarket.

Writing on Facebook, ASDA explained how the whole thing had played out.

The post read: "Asda security colleague Richard sprang into action when a car burst into flames right outside our Stanley Road supermarket in Birkenhead while regular customer Christine was in the driver's seat.

Richard grabbed a fire extinguisher and ran outside. He managed to get the bonnet open, with the help of another customer who had come to Christine's aid, before dousing the flames.

"The fire service arrived within minutes and made the car safe. Christine said: "I can't stress how grateful I am to him and the other customer. I was a wreck. I've been in a house fire before and I was in shock; I was shaking. It could have been a lot worse. I dread to think what would have happened if they weren't there."

"Richard said: "It was just one of those things – it was pure instinct. Timing was of the essence as if the flames had gone to the car's fuel line it could have exploded and it was parked right next to the doors of the store, so I had to make sure it was fully out.""

The post has been liked over 9,000 times, and more than 500 people have commented.

Responding to the post, one shopper said: "Go in that Asda all the time Richard is a top dude doesn't surprise me at all that he'd step up when needed. Good job!"

"Fabulous, what a great thing to do. Asda you must be very proud of a member of your team running out of your building to support the general public," a second said.

A third person praised: "An incredibly frightening ordeal for this poor lady to go through, but a massive well done to Richard and that customer by helping to make car safe and free her."
