Asda's new rules and changes to stores ahead of Christmas

With just a number of days left until the most festive day of the year, Asda has announced some big changes you’ll notice next time you visit.

Supermarkets will no doubt be getting busier than usual this week in the run up to Christmas, with shoppers out and about getting last-minute supplies.

However, with restrictions still in place across the country due to coronavirus, Christmas shopping will look different this year.

Supermarket giant Asda has introduced a number of new rules in order to protect staff and shoppers during the Christmas period.

Here’s what you’ll notice next time you visit Asda:

There’s more security

Asda is introducing extra security on the doors of all of its larger superstores between December 19 and 24 to help manage access to the shop.

This is in addition to the Asda Safety Marshals who are currently on duty at the front of every store.

You’ll be in a virtual queue

We’ve all gotten used to lengthy supermarket queues this year, after demand surged in March when lockdown began.

Asda will now be using a virtual queuing app, Qudini, at all 421 superstores, which means shoppers can wait in their cars until they’re allowed inside.

By scanning a QR code from posters at the stores, you can queue on your phone, rather than in person and when it’s almost your turn you’ll get a text to let you know.

Limits on shoppers in store

Most stores are still limiting the number of people allowed in at one time in order to allow for social distancing, but now Asda is adding a new system to ensure this.

Automatic counting technology has been installed at Asda's busiest stores to help keep track of customer numbers.

Changes to ‘touch points’

A protective antimicrobial coating is being added to customer ‘touch points’ in stores such as fridge and freezer handles and the checkout areas,

The coating, which provides a protective film that helps to kill bacteria and viruses, is also being applied to all basket and trolley handles.

More signage

Extra signage has been installed at Asda stores to remind customers to respect social distancing and to shop alone if they can to ease congestion in stores.
