Asda's 29p Christmas product that's beaten Waitrose and M&S in taste tests

Now December is fast-approaching, supermarkets like Asda, Aldi, Tesco, Sainsbury's, Morrisons and Lidl are all selling a whole list of festive treats.

One of the most widely-bought Christmas products is, without doubt, the classic mince pie.

There's plenty of options out there - from traditional pies to more 'interesting' flavours like salted caramel.

M&S is even selling a Percy Pig version for those who aren't fans of mincemeat.

Now Which? has revealed the best-rated supermarket mince pies for 2020, according to experts.

The best supermarket mince pies this Christmas come from Iceland and Asda, according to a panel of taste testers.

Which?'s annual festive test scored Asda's Extra Special Mince Pies and Iceland's Luxury All Butter Mince Pies joint first when it came to flavour.

Tesco Finest All Butter Mince Pies ranked third, while the most expensive pies sampled - produced by M&S and Waitrose - only came in fourth and seventh respecitvely, reports the Mirror.

Which? assembled a panel of 64 mince pie fans - broadly represent the demographic makeup of the UK - to test out what was on offer this year.

Asda's offering was described as having “crisp” and “buttery” pastry with an intricate design that one panelist said it would “lure them in”.

Iceland's mince pies were rated just as highly for taste, smell and texture - with one panelist saying they “tasted like a more expensive product”.

Tesco narrowly missed out on top spot - with pies described as “melt in the mouth” - but a few testers weren't keen on the firmer filling.

At the other end of the scale, Sainsbury's came dead last of the pies tested - with panelists saying they were “claggy”, tasted “stale” and “overcooked”.

Which? magazine editor Harry Rose said: “Nothing tastes more festive than a delicious warm and crumbly mince pie straight from the oven, and while this year Christmas might be a little different, we want to make sure that at least your mince pies don’t disappoint.”
