Asda pledges to ban bags from online orders saving 500 tonnes of plastic a year

Asda has pledged to ban carrier bags from its home delivery service saving 500 tonnes of plastic a year.

It will be the first supermarket to get rid of single-use plastic bags from its online delivery service.

Instead, shoppers will get their goods delivered in crates as of July 31.

There will no longer be an option to have a 'bagged' delivery on home and 'click and collect' orders in the nationwide move.

Asda delivery drivers will even offer to unload the shopping in a convenient place as part of the change.

The only exception will be with fresh fish and meat which will still need to be bagged up for safety reasons.

Simon Gregg, vice president of Asda's online grocery divison told The Sun : "We're working hard to reduce avoidable plastic wherever we can – because helping to reduce its impact on the environment matters to us, and we know it matters to our customers too.

"This is a simple change, but will have a significant impact on the amount of plastic we use as a business."

Mirror Online has contacted Asda for further comment.
