Asda manager in East Lothian raises £40,000 for Cancer Research by standing up for hours

An Asda worker in East Lothian has raised more than £40,000 over the last few years by literally standing up to cancer.

Adam Cook, deputy store manager at the Tranent branch, has been standing on his feet for hours at a time to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

He has been doing so to honour his father, who died from cancer in 2014. One of his most impressive feats took place last year, where he stood up for 34 hours on an entire train journey from Edinburgh to Amsterdam.

The 51-year-old's efforts have now been recognised by Asda's parent company WalMart, who have made a $10,000 donation from their Spark Kindness Initiative.

He and two colleagues took on the challenge while wearing kilts. Adam has also stood up for hours in his previous workplace at Asda in The Jewel.

Adam said: "It's amazing, absolutely amazing to be given this money for Cancer Research UK. I've been with Asda and Walmart for 35 years and it's not just a job, it's a family for me.

"If I can help just one other person who’s dealing with this terrible disease then it makes it all worthwhile."
