Asda makes change as UK families left £175 out of pocket due to cost of living crisis

Asda has launched a new “essential living hub” to help struggling shoppers during the cost of living crisis.

The new online space provides customers with hints, tips and hacks to make their money go further.

As well as ways to save cash in the supermarkets, it also covers how to save energy, budget better, and entertain the kids for free.

The new “essential living hub” can be accessed on the Asda website.

It comes as the latest Asda Income Tracker showed families in the UK are being left £175.80 out of pocket on average.

Household disposable incomes fell by 18% in June compared to the same period last year as the cost of living crisis continued to squeeze family budgets.

Soaring living costs, up 11% year-on-year in June, meant that families were on average £43.95 a week - or £175.80 per month - worse off compared to June 2021.

The average household had £200 per week left after paying tax and essential bills last month – a figure that has fallen for eight consecutive months to a figure last seen in December 2017.

The cost of living crisis is particularly hard for low-income families with 20% of UK households now having “negative disposable income”.

There was a shortfall of £60 per week in June between what they earned and what they needed to spend on essentials such as mortgage, rent, utility bills and transport costs.

For those visiting stores over the summer holidays, Asda is currently offering kids’ meals for £1 at its cafés, with no minimum adult spend.

Hot and cold meals are on offer for anyone under the age of 16, the supermarket said.

Baby food is also available as part of the initiative, with little ones able to enjoy a free pouch of Ella’s Kitchen baby food (70g pouch) in their local Asda café.

Tesco is giving away free kids’ meals this summer - but you need to be signed up to its Clubcard loyalty scheme.

The freebie applies to shoppers who purchase any item in a Tesco café.

The offer means parents can spend as little as 60p on a piece of fresh fruit to claim one free kids meal worth up to £3.25.

If you’re already signed up to its loyalty scheme, you’ll need to scan your Clubcard to get the offer.

Tesco Clubcard is free to sign up to - you can do this in stores or online. Tesco has 311 cafes across the country.
